SEASIDE, Calif. - The Wayne State volleyball team (3-1) concluded its trip to California with a 3-0 victory Saturday afternoon at the Otter Classic against the hosts from CSU Monterey Bay.
The Warriors won the first set by a considerable margin, 25-14, but had to fend off the Otters to take the final two sets, 25-19 and 25-23.
Sarha Gosselin (Harrison Twp., Mich./Warren Lincoln) had a productive afternoon, leading Wayne State with 13 kills while chipping in eight digs and three service aces. Lauren Mallast (Chesterfield, Mich./Anchor Bay), who had 11 kills with just one error, hit .435 in the match, while Kim Gear (Benton Harbor, Mich./Watervliet) collected six kills with no hitting errors (.857).
Mayssa Bazzi (Dearborn, Mich.) totaled 10 digs, and Katy Westenberg (Milford, Mich.) compiled 30 assists.
Wayne State will participate in the TownePlace Suites Classic next weekend, hosted by the University of Findlay. The Warriors will meet Bellarmine and Wheeling Jesuit on Friday, Sept. 5, followed by California (Pa.) and former GLIAC member Gannon on Saturday, Sept. 6.
NOTES
Wayne State posted a .319 attack percentage compared to CSUMB's .110 mark ... WSU had just two hitting errors in each of the first two sets ... six Warriors had at least five digs.
