Orlando, Fla. - Freshmen Sharon Gill (Windsor, Ont./Academie Ste. Cecile) extended her singles wining streak to six matches but it was not enough as the Wayne State women's tennis team concluded its Florida road trip with a 7-2 non-conference setback to Southern Illinois-Edwardsville.

WSU started in a 0-3 hole as SIU took all three double matches. The No. 1 tandem of Gill and freshman Milena Vuksanovic (Pancevo, Serbia/Uros Predic Secondary School) fell 8-3 to Laura Horning and Carli Connors while sophomore Meghan Luzod (Royal Oak, Mich./Dondero) and junior Sargam Bhatt (Canton, Mich.-Taylor Truman) lost 8-2 to Stephanie Clark and Sarah Rhein at the No. 2 position. The No. 3 squad of freshmen Jennifer Bradford (Detroit, Mich./Mumford) and Deby Correa (Belo Horizonte, Brazil/Colegio Padre Eustaquio) were edged by Amanda Niebur and Ali Wulfers, 8-5.

Wayne State hung tough in singles competition as Gill held off Connors in straight sets, 7-6 (8-6), 6-4 at No. 1 while Correa upended Clark, 6-2, 6-3. However, the Warriors came up short in two hard fought matches that went the distance. Bradford rallied from a set down but fell, 7-5, 3-6, 10-8, to Wulfersat at No. 4 while Bhatt dropped a 6-4, 3-6, 10-8, decision to Rhein at No. 6. SIU also got victories at the No. 2 slot as Horning held off Vuksanovic 7-6 (7-2), 6-4, while Laird downed Luzod 7-5, 6-2, to seal the 7-2 win.

WSU continues its spring schedule with two non-conference matches against Lake Superior and Saginaw Valley on Saturday, March 22.
