Orlando, Fla. - The Wayne State women's tennis team fell to nationally ranked Indianapolis in Orlando. Despite the setback, freshmen Sharon Gill (Windsor, Ont./Academie Ste. Cecile) increased her No. 1 singles win streak to four matches.
WSU (8-9) put fourth a valiant effort in doubles competition but dropped all three matches. The No. 1 tandem of Gill and freshman Milena Vuksanovic (Pancevo, Serbia/Uros Predic Secondary School) fell 8-3 to Lindsey Fischer and Ashley Liles. Indy's Melanie Sullivan and Jeannie Hartley held off sophomore Meghan Luzod (Royal Oak, Mich./Dondero) and freshman Jennifer Bradford (Detroit, Mich./Mumford), 8-5, at the No. 2 position. At the No. 3 slot, junior Sargam Bhatt (Canton, Mich.-Taylor Truman) and freshman Deby Correa (Belo Horizonte, Brazil/Colegio Padre Eustaquio) were edged by Laura Phillipp and Kristen Voltz, 9-7.
In singles play, the Warriors made a move winning three matches as Gill downed Fischer, 7-5, 6-2, at No. 1 while Luzod rallied from a set down to upend Sullivan, 0-6, 7-5, 6-0 at the No. 3 position. Bradford also took Phillipp in straight sets, 7-6, 6-1, at No. 4 but it was not enough as Indy won three matches at the No.2, No. 5 and No. 6 slots to close out the 6-3 win.
WSU continues its spring break Florida trip with a non-conference dual match against Lincoln on Wed, March 12.
