Romeoville, Ill. - The 2007 campaign for the Wayne State University softball team (41-17) came to an end Saturday evening in Romeoville, Ill., with a 14-6 setback to Grand Valley State (35-17) in an elimination game of the 2007 NCAA Great Lakes Regional at Lewis University.

After falling behind 2-0 in the top of the first, the Warriors answered with a run in the bottom of the inning. Junior first baseman Lindsey Perry (Taylor, Mich./Kennedy) had a leadoff walk and was sacrificed to second by senior catcher Sarah Kish (St. Catharines, Ont.). Perry advanced to third as Sarah Berry (Acton, Ont.) reached on an error, with Perry scoring on an RBI single by Meredith Boxberger (Plymouth, Mich.). Unfortunately the next two Warrior hitters retired leaving WSU trailing by one.

In the bottom of the third, Perry led off the frame with a solo home run tying the score at two. The run also gave Perry the WSU single-season mark.

Neither team was able to break the stalemate until the top of the fifth. Two of GVSU's first three batters were retired with the fourth hitter of the inning reaching on an error. The Lakers went on to record four unearned runs on a walk, a couple of singles and a WSU throwing error.

Wayne State did not quit despite two more GVSU runs in the sixth. Robyn Haig (Waterloo, Ont.) had a one-ouot single to right and Lisa Seymour (Davison, Mich.) followed with a single to left. Following a fielder's choice, Amanda Van't Wout drilled a pitch over the left field scoreboard for her first WSU home run, which pulled the Warriors within three at 8-5.

Grand Valley added six runs in the top of the seventh off relievers Sarah Ytsma (Chatham, Ont.) and Nicole Abel (Kitchener, Ont.).

Perry clubbed her second home run of the contest and 10th of the season leading off the bottom of the seventh but it was not enough.

WSU starter Molly Yetman (Cambridge, Ont.) allowed six runs (two earned) in 4.2 innings with five strikeouts and three walks. GVSU starter Stephanie Cole surrendered five earned runs in 5.2 innings before giving way to Lori Andjelich, who completed the contest.

The 41 wins by Wayne State is the second most in school history.

WSU graduates two seniors from the 2007 squad: catcher Sarah Kish and pitcher Sarah Ytsma.
