Romeoville, Ill. - The Wayne State University softball team (41-16) edged GLIAC-rival Gannon (38-15) 2-1 Saturday morning in a loser's bracket elimination game on day three of the 2007 NCAA Great Lakes Regional being hosted by Lewis University.
With the victory, WSU is one of 32 squads remaining alive for the national championship.
The Warriors, after scoring in the first inning in both games of a doubleheader sweep at Gannon on April 1, repeated the feat with a run in the bottom of the first today.
With two outs in the bottom of the first, Sarah Berry (Acton, Ont.) walked on a 3-2 pitch from GU's Jenn Kulick. During Meredith Boxberger's (Plymouth, Mich.) at bat, a wild throw by Lady Knight catcher Holli Michaels to first allowed Berry to advance to second. Boxberger's 11-pitch at bat resulted in another walk on a 3-2 offering. Robyn Haig (Waterloo, Ont.) then lined the next pitch past the pitcher and second baseman into centerfield scoring Berry.
WSU hurler Molly Yetman (Cambridge, Ont.) then retired the next 11 Gannon batters until back-to-back two-out doubles in the fifth by Katie Conner and pinch-hitter Kara Hensley tied the game at one.
Yetman then retired the final seven Lady Knight batters, while the Warrior offense was able to score the winning run in the bottom of the sixth.
Berry led off the sixth with a single to right center. Pinch-runner Laura Guzman (Royal Oak, Mich./Bishop Foley) advanced to second on a push-bunt base hit by Boxberger that went perfectly between the pitcher and first baseman with the second baseman going to cover first base. Haig's sacrifice bunt advanced both runners into scoring position. With the entire Gannon infield drawn in, Lisa Seymour's (Davison, Mich.) hard-hit base hit bounced off the Gannon shortstop's left shoulder and into center field allowing Guzman to score the winning run.
Yetman improves to 24-4 overall by allowing one run and three hits with 11 strikeouts and two walks. Kulick surrendered both WSU runs and had four strikeouts to two walks.
