Edwardsville, Ill. - The Wayne State University softball team suffered a 4-0 setback to Ferris State for its first loss in the 2008 NCAA Great Lakes Regional tournament.
The Warriors left five runners on base as they recorded four hits and had one batter reach on an error.
WSU senior pitcher Molly Yetman (Cambridge, Ont.) left the game in the second inning with an injury and was replaced by Nicole Abel (Kitchener, Ont.) with the game scoreless.
The Bulldogs scored three runs in the bottom of the third as Sarah Mueller reached on an error with one out. Krystle Bailey doubled in Mueller then Katie Kraai homered to left.
FSU's final run came in the sixth as Lynsay Weaver reached on an error with one out. A ground out advanced Weaver to second, and pinch-runner Colleen Roney scored on an RBI single by Amanda Harrington.
Holly Bruntjens went the distance to improve her record to 14-8. She struck out three and did not walk a batter. Ferris has not allowed a run in three NCAA tournament games.
Yetman struck out two and walked two in her 1.1 innings of work, while allowing one hit.
Abel suffered her ninth loss of the season as she allowed four runs (two earned) on six hits in 4.2 innings.
Seniors Meredith Boxberger (Plymouth, Mich.) went 2-for-2 to lead the WSU hitting attack. Seniors Sarah Berry (Acton, Ont.) and Robyn Haig (Waterloo, Ont.) accounted for the other WSU singles.
Wayne State will play SIU-Edwardsville in an elimination game starting at 5:25 p.m. Eastern today.
