Edwardsville, Ill. - The Wayne State University softball team (34-16 overall) recorded a 1-0 triumph over the University of Indianapolis (37-27) on Thursday afternoon in the rain-delayed opening round of the 2008 NCAA softball tournament.

The Warriors and Greyhounds each had five hits, but WSU junior outfielder Amanda Van't Wout (Guelph, Ont.) supplied the biggest hit with a solo home run leading off the bottom of the fourth.

It was Van't Wout's second home run in the last seven days (she homered last Friday in a GLIAC tournament win over Gannon).

Warrior senior pitcher Molly Yetman (Cambridge, Ont.) did the rest along with the Wayne State defense which played errorless.

Yetman struck out 12 and walked three but UI stranded eight base runners.

Recording base hits for WSU were Sarah Berry (Acton, Ont.), Robyn Haig (Waterloo, Ont.), Jaci Banton (Richmond Hill, Ont.) and Meredith Boxberger, along with Van't Wout.

Wayne State advances in the winner's bracket and will play tournament host SIU-Edwardsville at 2 p.m. Eastern on Friday in a winner's bracket semifinal contest. The Cougars won 6-5 in eight innings over West Virginia State.
