Final Stats

The Wayne State University softball team (27-12 overall, 14-2 GLIAC) blanked visiting Mercyhurst College (19-24 overall, 6-9 GLIAC) 7-0 in the second game of Sunday's GLIAC twinbill.

WSU junior pitcher Lauren Warkentien recorded her second career shutout (first since March 15, 2006, vs. West Virginia Wesleyan) by scattering seven Laker hits. She struck out three and did not walk a batter or allow a Laker baserunner to reach third.

Meanwhile, the Warrior offense pounded out 10 hits plus took five walks in scoring seven times. WSU also left 13 runners on base and went 7-for-26 with runners on base.

In the top of the first, Lindsey Perry had a leadoff single and was sacrificed to second by Stephanie LeClair. Sarah Berry then laced a 1-2 offering down the left field line to score Perry. Two batters later Berry scored on a Robyn Haig single.

In the third, Haig had a leadoff walk and Lisa Seymour doubled to deep center field scoring Haig. Mercyhurst made a pitching change with Kari Amboyer replacing Amanda Norman. A ground out moved Seymour to third and she scored on a sacrifice fly by Amanda Van't Wout putting WSU ahead 4-0.

Wayne State left the bases loaded in the fifth but did manage to score once as Jaci Banton walked with the bases loaded. Sarah Teller's single originally loaded the bases.

WSU added an unearned run in the sixth as Berry reached on an error, moved to second on a walk to Haig and scored on a single by Teller.

WSU's final run came in the seventh as pinch-hitter Laura Maiorana walked and later stole second. Following a walk to Rachel Spaccarotelli, Berry ripped a single through Amboyer's legs scoring Maiorana.

Berry and Teller each had two hits for WSU.

The Warriors will be idle for exams until concluding the conference schedule with doubleheaders at Ferris State (Friday) and at Grand Valley (Saturday).
