DETROIT - The Wayne State University softball team (26-12 overall, 13-2 GLIAC) suffered a 3-1 setback in the first game of Sunday's conference doubleheader to visiting Mercyhurst College (19-24 overall, 6-9 GLIAC).
The Lakers scored once in the top of the second on a leadoff walk, and back-to-back sacrifice bunts, before Danielle Zubek singled to left field on the first pitch.
The Warriors tied the score as senior Lindsey Perry homered to left field on a 2-0 offering leading off the third inning.
The game remained 1-1 until the top of the seventh. After Zubek was retired, Annie Dragolich and Kara Gorgos had back-to-back bunt singles. Erin Ratajczak's sacrifice bunt advanced both runners. Two wild pitches during Jessica McNurlen's at bat scored Dragolich then Gorgos.
In the bottom of the seventh, Jaci Banton had a leadoff infield single, but three of the next four WSU batters were retired ending the contest.
Wayne State was just 2-for-14 with runners on base and left nine runners stranded in the contest.
WSU senior Molly Yetman (20-4) suffered the loss despite striking out 10 and becoming the first pitcher in school history with at least 500 strikeouts.
MC starter Amanda Norman (8-10) scattered eight hits and two walks in limiting the Warriors to one run.
Two seniors - Lindsey Perry and Robyn Haig - each had two hits on "Senior Day."
