DETROIT - The Wayne State University softball squad (26-11 overall, 13-1 GLIAC) completed its sweep of visiting Gannon University (23-17 overall, 5-9 GLIAC) with a 10-0 triumph in the second game of Saturday's GLIAC twinbill. The 10 runs by WSU equals a season-high set on April 2 vs. Hillsdale.
The Warriors lead the GLIAC at 13-1 and will conclude the home portion of their regular-season schedule tomorrow with a league doubleheader versus Mercyhurst College. First pitch is at 1 p.m.
After a scoreless first inning, WSU scored nine runs in the second inning on eight hits, a hit by pitch and two walks. Robyn Haig started the hit parade with a single down the left field line. After a pop out, Sarah Teller singled on a 1-2 pitch. Amanda Van't Wout's single to left center plated Haig with the first run of the contest. Jaci Banton's infield single loaded the bases and Lindsey Perry was hit by a pitch forcing in Teller. Stephanie LeClair then walked on four pitches. After a pop out, Meredith Boxberger walked to score Banton. Then Haig, who started the inning, doubled in three runs with a blast to right center. Lisa Seymour doubled and Teller singled scoring two more runs.
WSU added a single run in the third on back-to-back doubles by Perry and LeClair to knock out Gannon starter Kadie Ondrus.
For the second straight game, the Lady Knights were unable to get a runner past second base. WSU starter Molly Yetman won her 20th game of the season by allowing just two hits with four strikeouts in four innings. Nicole Abel tossed a scoreless fifth inning.
Ondrus allowed all 10 runs on 11 hits in two innings of work. Kelsey Brickman limited the Warriors to two hits in the final three innings.
Five WSU batters had multiple-hit games including Amanda Van't Wout who went three-for-three. Robyn Haig had two hits and three RBI, while Sarah Teller, Jaci Banton and Stephanie LeClair each had two hits.
Since starting the season 8-9, Wayne State has won 18 of its last 20 games.
