DETROIT - The Wayne State University softball team (25-11 overall, 12-1 GLIAC) recorded a 9-0 win in five innings over visiting Gannon University (23-16 overall, 5-8 GLIAC) in the first game of a GLIAC doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at the WSU Softball Stadium.
Warrior senior pitcher Molly Yetman yielded just one infield single (to GU's Hannah Koenig), while recording 10 strikeouts and no walks. Koenig's base hit was a blooper just over Yetman that didn't reach the second base bag with one out in the second. Meanwhile, the WSU batters recorded seven hits and scored nine runs.
In the bottom of the first, Lindsey Perry was hit by a pitch and moved to second on a ground out. Sarah Berry laced a double into left center on the first pitch plating Perry. After a ground out, Berry scored when Robyn Haig's grounder was misplayed.
Wayne State batted around in the second scoring five times. Amanda Van't Wout started the frame with a single through the right side on a 1-2 offering. Jaci Banton walked on a 3-2 pitch and Perry advanced both runners with a sacrifice bunt. Stephanie LeClair's sacrifice fly scored Van't Wout and Berry was walked on four pitches. After Berry stole second, Meredith Boxberger doubled into left center on a 1-2 pitch scoring both Banton and Berry. The Lady Knights made a pitching change with Kelsey Brickman replacing Lauren Soldner in the circle. Haig was hit by a pitch and Lisa Seymour walked to reload the bases. Sarah Teller had a two-run single through the right side on a 2-2 offering after fouling off a pair of pitches once she fell behind 1-2 in the count.
WSU added two runs in the third as Banton and Perry had back-to-back doubles with Perry scoring on an error a few batters later.
Soldner suffered the loss after allowing four hits and six runs (five earned) in 1.2 innings. Brickman was tagged for three runs (two earned) in 2.1 innings.
Seven different Warriors had hits in the contest with Teller and Boxberger each driving in a pair of runs.
