DETROIT - The Wayne State University softball team (23-10 overall, 10-0 GLIAC) remained unbeaten in conference play with a 4-1 victory over visiting Northwood University (14-19 overall, 3-7 GLIAC) in the second game of Wednesday's GLIAC doubleheader in Detroit.
The Warriors, who have won 15 of their last 16 games, took an early 2-0 lead on Sarah Berry's fifth home run of the season in the top of the first.
After the Timberwolves made it 2-1 with an RBI double by Alyssa Eppler in the second, WSU regained a two-run lead with a single run in the fourth. Robyn Haig had an infield single and Stephanie LeClair reached on a fielder's choice then stole second. LeClair moved to third on a ground out, then scored on a wild pitch.
The final run of the game came in the top of the fifth as Lindsey Perry had a one-out single on a 3-2 pitch. She advanced to second on a walk to Amanda Van't Wout and scored on an RBI single through the left side by Berry.
Lauren Warkentien started in the circle for WSU and earned her second win of the season. She allowed just two hits and one run in 4.1 innings, with Nicole Abel recording her second save of the day by tossing a hitless 2.2 innings. Abel faced nine batters retiring eight.
Alicia Brandenburg started for Northwood and allowed four earned runs in five innings with three walks and one strikeout.
Sarah Berry had two of WSU's five hits and drove in three runs.
Wayne State continues its stretch of 10 games in six days with home make-up doubleheader on Thursday against Saginaw Valley. First pitch is at 4 p.m.
