Erie, Pa. - The Wayne State University softball team (19-8 overall, 3-1 GLIAC) completed a doubleheader sweep of 19th-ranked Gannon University (18-8 overall, 2-2 GLIAC) with a 4-3 victory in game two. The win was the 13th in the last 15 contests for the Warriors.
WSU scored twice in the bottom of the first inning (the home team switches for the second game of conference twinbills) as senior catcher Sarah Kish (St. Catharines, Ont./St. Francis S.S.) had a one-out and moved to second when Sarah Berry (Acton, Ont.) was hit by a 1-2 offering. Robyn Haig's (Waterloo, Ont./Waterloo C.I.) single down the left field scored Kish, and both Berry and Haig advanced a base on a wild pitch. Berry then scored on a single to left by Meredith Boxberger (Canton, Mich.).
The Lady Knights scored once in the second and twice in the third to take a 3-2 lead, but the Warriors tied the game in the bottom of the third with Kish again starting the rally. She had an infield single to lead off the frame and was sacrificed to second by Berry. Kish advanced to third on a groundout by Haig and scored when Boxberger laced a single through the left side on an 0-1 pitch.
Kish started the winning rally in the bottom of the fifth with a one-out single up the middle. Berry walked on a 3-1 pitch with both runners advancing on a groundout by Haig. Boxberger's single to right field scored Kish with what would prove to be the winning run.
Freshman Nicole Abel (Kitchener, Ont./St. Mary's) started in the circle for WSU and allowed three earned runs in three innings before giving way to senior Sarah Ytsma (Chatham, Ont./McGregor S.S.). She allowed three hits and no runs in 3.2 innings until Molly Yetman (Cambridge, Ont./Glenview Park. S.S.) came in for the final out to earn her second save of the year. Ytsma improves to 5-4 with the triumph.
Kish and Boxberger each had three hits with Kish scoring three times, twice on RBI by Boxberger, who finished with three RBI.
Wayne State returns home for GLIAC doubleheaders on Friday (Grand Valley) and Saturday (Ferris State).
