April 1, 2007
Erie, Pa. - The Wayne State University softball squad (18-8 overall, 2-1 GLIAC) won the first game of Sunday's league doubleheader at Gannon University (18-7, 2-1 GLIAC), 4-0, behind a three-hit shutout by junior Molly Yetman (Cambridge, Ont./Glenview Park. S.S.).
The Warriors started strong scoring three times in the top of the first. Lindsey Perry (Taylor, Mich./Kennedy) led off the frame with a single through the right side and Sarah Kish (St. Catharines, Ont./St. Francis S.S.) followed with a bunt single. Sarah Berry's (Acton, Ont.) single through the right side plated Berry and moved Kish to third. Robyn Haig's (Waterloo, Ont./Waterloo C.I.) sac fly to right scored Kish. Meredith Boxberger (Canton, Mich.) had an infield single and the bases were loaded after Lisa Seymour (Davison, Mich.) was hit by a pitch. A fielder's choice with Berry being out at the plate left the bases loaded and Katie Golub (Lansing, Mich./Grand Ledge) was hit by a pitch forcing home Boxberger.
That would be all the runs Yetman would need for her ninth win of the season (against only one loss) and sixth shutout (she also shared a shutout with Sarah Ytsma versus Tiffin). Yetman struck out seven and walked one.
After the Golden Knights had runners at first and third with no outs in the bottom of the first, Kish threw out the runner stealing second and Yetman followed with a strikeout and a groundout. Yetman retired nine straight GU batters until a one-out walk in the bottom of the fourth, but the next two hitters were retired. She also set down the final eight Gannon batters of the contest.
WSU added an insurance run in the top of the seventh as Berry had a leadoff infield single and Haig laced an 0-2 pitch into centerfield for a hit. Following a fielder's choice, Seymour singled to center field scoring Haig.
Gannon entered the day with a .386 team batting average, but was limited to three hits by Yetman. Berry and Seymour each had three hits for the Warriors, who pounded out 11 hits off GU's Jenn Kulick.
Notes:
Yetman has 108 strikeouts this season, which is tied-for-10th highest in a year by a WSU hurler.
Her six shutouts is tied-for-third best since shutout records started being kept in 1994.
