Potsdam, N.Y. - An early two goal deficit coupled with a struggling offense spelled doom for the Wayne State University women's hockey team as the Warriors fell 7-1 to Clarkson University in its 2007-08 regular season opener at Cheel Arena Friday afternoon.
WSU found it self down quickly at the start of the first period as Clarkson junior Marie-Jo Gaudet tallied the first goal of the game just three minuets into the contest followed by another 47 seconds later from Genevieve Lavoie at the 4:10 mark to give the Golden Knights a 2-0 lead.
For the game, Wayne State's offense only mustered 16 shots while going 0-for-5 on the power play. Conversely, the WSU defense could not slow down a potent Clarkson offense as CU tallied 44 total shots while scoring thee goals on six attempts with a man advantage.
WSU pulled within one goal as sophomore Katrina Protopapas (Chatham, Ont./Bluewater Hawks) cashed in with her first goal of the season off a wrap-around attempt by senior Ashley King (Winnipeg, Man./River East Lightning) at the 15:42 mark of the first period.
However, that would be it for WSU as Clarkson added two goals in the second period and three in the third cruising to the 7-1 victory.
Junior Melissa Boal (Pakenham, Ont./Ottawa Raiders) led the Warriors with six shots but could not get any past CU goalie Lauren Damn who picked up the win. Senior goalie Valery Turcotte (Jonquiere, Quebec/Royal Metabetchouan) made 33 saves in the losing effort for WSU.
Clarkson was paced by Britney Selina with two goals and one assist while Gaudet added two goals in addition to Lavoie's goal and two assists.
Game two of the series between Wayne State and Clarkson is scheduled for Saturday Oct. 6 at noon.
