University Center - The Wayne State University women's basketball team (3-7 overall) fell to Lake Superior State University (8-3 overall) by a score of 58-46 at the O'Neill Jr. Arena, on the campus of Saginaw Valley University on Friday night.
Both teams started off slowly, as neither team could get a rhythm due to shot clock problems. After scoring the initial bucket of the game on a lay-up by Sophomore Joy Nash (Muskegon) in the first 19 seconds, the Warriors did not post another point until a free throw by Sophomore Chastidy Miller (White Lake/Waterford Kettering) with 12:39 left in the opening half. Wayne found themselves down by a score of 12-4, before a 3 pointer by Freshman Brooke Bowers (Delphos, Ohio/Delphos Jefferson) cut the lead to five.
That was a close as the Warriors would get in the first 20 minutes, as several runs by the Lakers put them in control. Wayne State ended the half with only 12 points, on 4 for 29 shooting. The first half output was their worst shooting half of the season, and went into the locker room down by a score of 27-12.
The Warriors opened the second half on a 9-0 run, with buckets by Nash, and Juniors Brittany White (Chicago/Morgan Park), and Nicole Rogers (Lansing/Everett), to cut the Lakers lead to 21-29. Lake Superior went on a 16-6 run though, to put them on top by 17 with only 11:49 remaining in the game.
With the game seemingly in hand, the Warriors seemed to be inspired by some timely defensive efforts. Several steals, and forced turnovers by the warriors sparked a 18-5 run over the next 6 minutes, bringing the Warriors to within 5 points with just 1:39 left in the game. Miller led the way for Wayne during the run with 7 points, while Rogers added 6.
That was as close as the Warriors would get though, as some timely free throw shooting on the Lakers part to close out the game kept Wayne State at bay.
Miller lead the Warriors on the night with 11 points, while Rogers chipped in 8, along with 6 rebounds and 3 steals. Sophomore Monique George (Detroit/Cass Tech) led Wayne in rebounding with 11.
The Warriors return to the O'Neill Jr. Arena on Saturday to take on the Saginaw Valley State University Cardinal at 1pm. This will be the second of seven straight road games for Wayne State.
