University Center, Mich. - The Wayne State University women's basketball team (4-4 overall, 1-2 GLIAC) suffered a 59-41 setback at Saginaw Valley State University (4-4 overall, 1-3 GLIAC) Saturday evening.
The Warriors started strong scoring nine of the game's first 13 points on triples by Chastidy Miller (White Lake, Mich./Waterford Kettering), Nicole Rogers (Lansing, Mich./Everett) and Miller again in the first 5:18 of the contest.
Another triple by Miller at the 12:21 mark gave WSU a 12-6 lead. It would be Wayne State's last points for five minutes until Kim Gear (Watervliet, Mich.) scored on a lay-up from Rogers to pull within one at 15-14 as the Cardinals rattled off nine consecutive points.
WSU would only get two more buckets in the final seven minutes of the first half, a jumper by Joy Nash (Muskegon, Mich.) at 1:45 and a lay-up by Gear at the 23 second mark.
WSU shot 31.8 percent (7-22) in the first half and had 16 turnovers. Meanwhile, SVSU shot 29 percent (9-31) but had only three miscues.
The Warriors pulled within nine at 31-22 at the 15:54 mark of the second half but SVSU scored the next four points and WSU never got closer than 11 the rest of the way.
Rogers led WSU with 14 points and nine rebounds, while Gear and Miller each had 11 points. Brittany Burkhardt had a game-high 19 points for SVSU while LaTille Ross added 17 points.
