DETROIT - The Wayne State University women's basketball team (1-4 overall, 0-1 GLIAC) dropped its GLIAC opener 87-66 to visiting Gannon University (3-1 overall, 1-0 GLIAC) Thursday evening at the Matthaei.

The first nine minutes were evenly played with four ties and neither team leading by more than four points. WSU took its last lead of the contest, 19-18, with 10:33 remaining in the first half on a triple by senior Cherita Smith (Grand Rapids, Mich./Union).

Over the next six minutes, the Warriors were outscored 9-0 before sophomore Chastidy Miller (White Lake, Mich./Waterford Kettering) split a pair from the foul line to end the Lady Knights run. A Smith lay-up at 4:20 ended the field goal drought.

Gannon held a 40-28 advantage at intermission despite both teams shooting 32 percent from the floor (GU 11-34; WSU 10-31). The scoring difference came from the charity stripe where the Lady Knights made 18 of 20 (90 percent) compared to the Warriors five of nine (56 percent).

In the second half, Wayne State pulled within nine three times, the final occurring with 13:48 left at 52-43, but GU scored the next four points.

The Lady Knights made their final 12 foul shots over the final 67 seconds to secure the win.

Wayne State entertains Mercyhurst at 1 p.m. on Saturday at the Matthaei.

NOTES: Senior Bethany Mesko (Traverse City, Mich./Central) equaled a career-high with six field goals made.

Miller recorded her 15th double-digit effort of her WSU career with 11 points.

Sophomore Joy Nash (Muskegon, Mich.) had a career-high nine assists, while also reaching double figures for the 13th time in her Warrior career with 11 points.

Smith tied a career-best with four three-pointers.

Junior Bethany Jury (Plymouth, Mich./Livonia Ladywood) had a career-high seven points.
