Hillsdale, Mich. - The Wayne State University women's basketball team (10-9 overall, 6-6 GLIAC) battled division leading Hillsdale College (17-3 overall, 10-2 GLIAC) down to the wire but fell 67-64 Saturday afternoon.
In a game that had 13 lead changes and the score being tied 16 times it came down to the final 30 seconds.
The score was tied for the final time at 58 with 4:55 remaining following a pair of free throws by HC's Katie Cezat. WSU junior guard Joy Nash (Muskegon, Mich.) put the Warriors in front for the final time with two foul shots at the 4:29 mark.
On the Chargers ensuing possession, Cezat grabbed an offensive rebounds and Kara McCormick hit a triple putting the hosts ahead 61-60 with just over four minutes left.
After the Warriors failed to score on the offensive end HC's Claire Aubrey made two foul shots for a 63-60 lead with 3:37 left.
After a missed triple try by WSU, a Nash steal was followed by two more missed shots by the Warriors. Cezat split a pair from the charity stripe giving Hillsdale a 64-60 lead with 2:15 remaining.
Nash's shot was blocked by Cezat, who then split a pair again from the foul line with 1:52 left. Nash made a lay-up that was followed by 1-of-2 free throws by Cezat making it 66-62 with 71 seconds remaining.
Junior Jasmine McCall (Detroit, Mich./CMA) grabbed an offensive rebound and hit a jumper from the paint with 55 seconds left cutting the WSU deficit to two.
Hillsdale's Brooke Knight made the second of a double bonus foul shot attempts with 42 seconds remaining. Just under 10 seconds later, WSU junior Chastidy Miller (White Lake, Mich./Waterford Kettering) drove towards the bucket and in an attempt to draw contact lost the ball out of bounds with 33.4 left on the game clock.
The Chargers were able to maintain possession despite outstanding defense by Wayne State and Knight's jumper in the final five seconds bounced high off the rim and WSU was unable to gain possession.
Cezat scored a game-high 42 points on 12-of-19 from the floor and a school record 18-of-23 from the foul line. She also had a game-high 16 rebounds.
McCall scored a team-best 20 points for WSU, while recording five steals. Miller scored 15 which included a 9-of-9 performance from the foul line. Nash added 11 points and three steals.
Wayne State will try and improve its 1-5 road GLIAC mark on Thursday at Mercyhurst. Tip-off at the Mercyhurst Athletic Center is scheduled for 6 p.m.
Notes:
Wayne State shot a season-best 87 percent from the foul line, while recording the second most free throws made (20) and attempted (23) on the season.
The four three-pointers made by the Warriors tied a season-low.
Jasmine McCall had 20 points for the second consecutive game and the fourth time this season. Her previous two 20-point games, before this week, were also in back-to-back affairs.
Chastidy Miller scored in double figures for the fifth straight contest and has 110 points in that span.
Both teams made 20 field goal attempts in the contest (WSU 58 attempts to Hillsdale's 50).
The largest lead by anyone in the entire game was five points.
