DETROIT - The Wayne State University women's basketball team (9-8 overall, 5-5 GLIAC) won its third consecutive contest with a 93-73 triumph over visiting Mercyhurst College (6-14 overall, 1-9 GLIAC) Saturday afternoon at the Matthaei.
Warrior sophomore guard Brooke Bowers (Delphos, Ohio/Jefferson) made a school-record nine three pointers and finished with a career-high 35 points.
MC started strong scoring the first four points of the game for its largest lead of the contest. WSU took its first lead of the match (10-9) with 14:16 remaining on a lay-up by junior Monique George (Detroit, Mich./Cass Tech) off an assist from classmate Joy Nash (Muskegon, Mich.).
The guests last lead would be 16-14 following a jumper by Amy Achesinski with 11:02 remaining in the first half. The Warriors responded with a 20-4 run over the next five minutes to take a 34-20 advantage. Bowers started the rally with a triple and scored eight points during the run. Junior Chastidy Miller (White Lake, Mich./Waterford Kettering), despite having flu-like symptoms scored five points during the stretch including a triple.
Wayne State's lead was down to nine with just under a minute to go before intermission following a conventional three-point play by Achesinski. Freshman Chelsea Kouri (Clarkston, Mich.) regained the double-digit lead with a triple.
WSU led 44-34 at the break after shooting 44.2 percent (19-43) from the floor in the opening 20 minutes compared to MC's 61.9 percent (13-21). The Warriors had 13 offensive rebounds compared to the Lakers 11 defensive rebounds.
Wayne State's lead was cut to 10 at 46-36 75 seconds into the second half after a lay-up by Achesinski but WSU scored the next five points on a conventional three-point play by junior Jasmine McCall (Detroit, Mich./CMA) and jumper by George.
The Warrior lead was never less than 12 the rest of the contest.
Besides Bowers' 35 points, Miller scored 20 in 21 minutes with McCall adding 15 points and six steals. Achesinski scored a game-high 38 points on 13-of-16 from the floor and 12-of-15 from the foul line.
WSU held a slim 36-33 advantage on the boards with senior Nicole Rogers (Lansing, Mich./Everett) grabbing a game-best nine rebounds.
Wayne State concludes its three-game home stand with a 5:30 p.m. tip-off on Thursday, Jan. 31 vs. Findlay. The game will also be televised live by Comcast Local.
Notes:
Joy Nash had eight assists to one turnover and finished the week with 17 assists to two turnovers.
Chelsea Kouri had a career-high four rebounds.
Chastidy Miller made three three-pointers in the game, the fifth time this year she hit three triples in a contest.
Miller scored at least 20 points for the fifth time this year and the 10th time in her career.
Brooke Bowers, in addition to the aforementioned school record nine three-pointers made and career-high 35 points, also set personal bests in field goals made (12) and minutes played (38), while tying her career-high in rebounds (4).
It was the third time this year WSU scored at least 90 points in a game.
WSU is 5-0 when leading at halftime and extended its series winning streak vs. Mercyhurst to four games.
The Warriors are 4-1 in GLIAC Saturday contests and 3-1 vs. GLIAC South opponents.
Head coach Gloria Bradley improved to 7-1 at home versus Mercyhurst.
