Midland, Mich. - Members of the Wayne State University men's tennis team competed on Friday in day one of the 2007 Wilson/ITA Great Lakes Regional hosted by Northwood University at the Midland Tennis Center.
Sophomore Antoine Marenaud (Bordeaux, France) was seeded ninth and recorded victories over Brian Anderson of Ferris State (6-1, 6-2) and Patryk Polus of Grand Valley (6-1, 6-4). He will face the No. 5 seeded Christoph Burger of Southern Indiana in the round of 16 on Saturday morning.
Also competing in singles for the Warriors were sophomore Kevin Turnbull (Shelby Twp., Mich./Warren DeLaSalle), senior Alejandro Gomez (Comitan Chiapas, Mexico), senior Donavon Mitchell (Detroit, Mich./Mumford) and Johan Maubacq.
Turnbull won 6-2, 7-5 in his opening match over Matt Globerson of Grand Valley. In the second round, Turnbull fell to Burger 6-0, 6-0.
Gomez defeated Lake Superior's Robbie Nelson, 6-0, 6-1, in the first round before falling to the No. 12 seed - Renato Tamashiro of Grand Valley, 6-3, 1-6, (10-7) in the second round.
Mitchell suffered a 6-1, 6-2 setback to Northwood's Bertrand Vigouroux, the No. 16 seed, in the first round.
Maubaeg was seeded eighth and recorded a 6-1, 6-1 first round win over Steve Fox of Findlay. In the second round, Maubaeg was a 6-0, 6-1 victor over Grand Valley's Leon Cerdena.
In doubles competition, WSU went 0-3 in the first round.
Maubaeg and Marenaud lost 8-2 to Northwood's Vigouroux and Oliver Brignoli.
Junior Chris Green (Macomb, Mich./Dakota) and Gomez suffered an 8-1 setback to Grand Valley's duo of Tamashiro and Patrick Troy.
Mitchell and Turnbull were defeated 8-6 by the eighth seeded tandem from Northwood of Henryk Seeger and Peter Kazianschuetz.
