Midland, Mich. - The Wayne State men's tennis team (10-9 overall, 3-4 GLIAC) won the third-place match today by defeating Mercyhurst, 5-2, in the final day of the GLIAC Tournament at Northwood University. The Warriors finished two spots better than last year's tournament.
Wayne State won all four singles matches as Antoine Marenaud (Bordeaux, France) at #1 and Kevin Turnbull (Shelby Twp., Mich./Warren DeLaSalle) at #6 did not finish their matches due to WSU having already won five points.
Wayne State had singles wins from Alejandro Gomez (Comitan Chiapas, Mexico) at #2 (he is unbeaten in his last nine matches; his match against Northwood on April 21 was unfinished), Donavon Mitchell (Detroit, Mich./Mumford) at #3, Arthur Carrilho (Jaoa Pessoa, Brazil) at #4 and Ryan Buck (Detroit, Mich./Utica) at #5.
Wayne State won one of three doubles matches as the #2 team of Marenaud/Buck defeated Mijo Cotic and Kyle King, 9-7.
