COLUMBIA, Mo. - Two more school records fell as nine members of the Wayne State men's swimming and diving team qualified for Thursday's finals on the second day of the 2008 NCAA Championships, hosted by the University of Missouri S&T.
The 10th-place 200 free relay of Cauli Bedran (Rio de Janiero, Brazil), Christer Tour (Farsta, Sweden), Alex Davidson (Napoleon, Mich./Jackson), and Tim Giblin (Midland, Mich./Midland Dow) broke the school record by .40 seconds with a time of 1:23.26.
A.J. Erard (Troy, Mich./Royal Oak Shrine) placed 14th in the 400 individual medley (4:04.56), and Sean Smith (Auburn, Mich./Bay City Western) qualified in a tie for ninth in the 100 butterfly (50.13).
Breaking the previous school mark of 1:40.09 set by David Lutz in 2005, Sebastian Rzepa (Clinton Twp., Mich./Chippewa Valley) finished ninth in the 200 free with a time of 1:39.80. Justin Shields (Chesterfield, Mich./Anchor Bay) came in 29th (1:42.36).
In addition, the 400 medley relay quartet of Bedran, Tour, Smith and Per Bergstrom (Fagersta, Sweden) qualified for the "A" final by placing sixth in the prelims in a time of 3:22.54. Bedran also tied Luiz Pacheco's school record of 50.44 in the 100 backstroke.
Diver Cayce Bolt (Sterling Hts., Mich./Warren Mott) was eighth in Thursday's one-meter prelims with a score of 389.75 to qualify for tonight's final.
The Warriors, after achieving their first national champion relay ever Wednesday night in the 200 medley relay, are in seventh place heading into Thursday's finals. Fans can follow the results from the Mizzou Aquatic Center live.
