Men's Swimming & Diving Finishes Second At Calvin Invitational

YPSILANTI, Mich. - The Wayne State University men's swimming and diving team came in second place out of four teams at the Calvin College Invitational in Eastern Michigan's Jones Natatorium.

Denison University won the meet with 665 points, followed by Wayne State (521.50), Olivet College (415), and Calvin (218.50).

A.J. Erard (Troy, Mich./Royal Oak Shrine) won two events, and diver Cayce Bolt (Sterling Hts., Mich./Warren Mott) made his bid to go to nationals with a first-place score of 282.45 in the one-meter competition. Bolt also won the three-meter event (258.00).

Wayne State was off to a hot start after winning the first event, as the 400 medley relay team of Cauli Bedran (Rio de Janiero, Brazil), Per Bergstrom (Fagersta, Sweden), Sean Smith (Auburn, Mich./Bay City Western), and Tim Giblin (Midland, Mich./Dow) posted a first-place time of 3:33.87.

James Ekleberry (Rochester Hills, Mich./Avondale) and Matt Leix (Flint, Mich./Southwestern) finished fourth in their respective events, the 1000 free (10:13.72) and 200 free (1:47.80). Bedran and Tiago Oliveira (Raul Soares, Brazil) came in third (22.08) and fourth (22.13) in the 50 free.

Erard won the 200 individual medley (1:58.33) with Smith finishing third (2:01.11), while Smith and Brett Salogar (Bay City, Mich./Western) went one-two in the 200 butterfly with respective times of 1:56.17 and 1:57.99. Smith's 200 fly time also matched the NCAA "B" qualifying standard.

Oliveira finished second in the 100 free (48.72) as did Leix in the 200 backstroke (2:00.98). Erard won the 200 breaststroke (2:13.60) and the 400 free relay squad of Bedran, Giblin, Bergstrom, and Oliveira came in second (3:12.13).

WSU will head to Lewis next Saturday, Nov. 17, for a dual meet starting at 11:00 a.m.
