INDIANAPOLIS - The Wayne State men's swimming team moved up two spots into second place after day two at the 2008 GLIAC Championship, hosted by Indianapolis.
The Warriors have 203 points through Thursday, 45 behind leader Grand Valley State. Lewis University (196) and Indianapolis (195) are separated by one point, followed by Ashland (176), Gannon (165), and Findlay (73).
In the first event of the day for the men, the 200 free relay combination of Tim Giblin (Midland, Mich./Midland Dow), Per Bergstrom (Fagersta, Sweden), Alex Davidson (Napoleon, Mich./Jackson), Cauli Bedran (Rio de Janiero, Brazil) won in a time of 1:23.80.
James Ekleberry (Rochester Hills, Mich./Avondale) finished eighth (4:44.94) in the A final of the 500 free, while four Warriors competed in the B final. Sebastian Rzepa (Clinton Twp., Mich./Chippewa Valley) finished 11th (4:43.70), Matt Leix (Flint, Mich./Southwestern) came in 13th (4:44.66), Justin Shields (Chesterfield, Mich./Anchor Bay) placed 15th (4:54.56), and Ben Dueweke (Macomb, Mich./Dakota) finished in 16th place (4:55.28).
In the A final of the 200 individual medley, Matt Carlson (Plymouth, Mich./Canton) came in eighth place (1:57.43), and Davidson took 11th in the B final (1:57.53).
Two Warriors swam in each heat of the 50 free. Bedran and Giblin placed fifth (21.47) and seventh (21.79), respectively, in the A final. Additionally, Bedran also earned an NCAA "B" qualifier in the preliminary round with a time of 21.44. Meanwhile, in the B final, Christer Tour (Farsta, Sweden) finished 10th (21.81) and Bergstrom placed 13th (22.03).
The conference meet will continue Friday morning with a preliminary round at 10:30 a.m. before the finals at 6:00 p.m.
