ASHLAND, Ohio - The Wayne State swimming squad defeated both Ashland University (139.5-121.5) and Clarion University (147-140) in a three-team meet Saturday afternoon. Clarion also upended the host Eagles, 162-125.
The Warriors won two relays and four individual swims, including two wins by Christer Tour (Farsta, Sweden) in his first meet of the season.
Tour took first place in the 100 and 200 breaststroke events with respective times of 59.15 and 2:10.13, narrowly missing NCAA "B" qualifiers in both.
The 200 medley relay combination of Sean Smith (Auburn, Mich./Bay City Western), Tour, Tiago Oliveira (Raul Soares, Brazil), and Tim Giblin (Midland, Mich./Midland Dow) came in first place (1:36.76), as did the 200 medley relay of Giblin, Tour, Per Bergstrom (Fagersta, Sweden), and Cauli Bedran (Rio de Janiero, Brazil) with a time of 1:26.01.
Smith won the 200 butterfly (1:56.21) while Bedran led the pack in the 100 fly (52.75).
Other strong performances included Giblin's second-place finish in the 50 free (21.91), Bedran's runner-up showing in the 100 back (52.83), and A.J. Erard's (Troy, Mich./Royal Oak Shrine) second- and third-place finishes in the 200 individual medley (1:59.79) and 200 breaststroke (2:14.00), respectively.
Following the Youngstown (Ohio) Diving Invitational on Feb. 9, the Warriors will head for the GLIAC Championships (Feb. 13-16) hosted by the University of Indianapolis.
