FINDLAY, Ohio - The Wayne State golf team finished in sixth place at the NCAA Super Regional which concluded Wednesday at Red Hawk Run Golf Course. Redshirt sophomore Joe Juszczyk (Dearborn Heights, Mich./Divine Child), who led the field of 45 Great Lakes Region players after each of the first two rounds, held on to earn medalist honors (68-68-77--213).
Juszczyk, who tied Joe Spatafore's 54-hole school record of 213 set in 1983, is the first Wayne State golfer to win the Super Regional and will be the first to compete at the NCAA Championships since head coach Mike Horn in 1986.
The only golfer under par for the event, Juszczyk (-3) finished three strokes ahead of Ferris State's Eric Lilleboe and Missouri Western State's Aaron Lisenbee, who were even par at 216.
As a team, WSU posted a combined score of 903, finishing ahead of Findlay (905) and Saginaw Valley State (937) in the Great Lakes Region. Regional winners Washburn (884) and Indianapolis (885) as well as runner-up Grand Valley State (887) will advance to nationals.
For the Warriors, Eric Johnson (Marquette, Mich.) shot an even-par 72 in Wednesday's final round and finished tied for 14th (78-75-72--225), with Ryan Johnson (New Boston, Mich./Huron) a stroke behind in a tie for 19th (77-70-79--226). Brett Hudson (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Orchard Lake St. Mary's) tied for 37th (78-76-85--239) and Bryan Lynch (White Lake, Mich./Lakeland) came in 45th (84-81-94--259).
The NCAA Division II Men's Golf Championship will be held May 14-17 at Memorial Park Golf Course in Houston, Texas. The event is in conjunction with the Spring Championships Festival, hosted by Rice University and the Harris County-Houston Sports Authority.
