Wayne State University senior safety/kick returner Dante Dunn (Lansing, Mich./Waverly) has been selected GLIAC (Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) Special Teams Player of the Week for the second time in his career (first was Oct. 21, 2006).
In WSU's 14-10 win over Mercyhurst on Saturday, Dunn went 93 yards on a kickoff return to put the Warriors ahead 7-3 midway through the first quarter. It was his third kickoff return for a touchdown in the last 16 games.
Last year Dunn was voted to the All-GLIAC First Team as a return specialist while earning Hansen's Football Gazette All-Northwest Region Third Team honors as a return specialist.
From his safety position, Dunn intercepted a pass on the final play of the first half at the WSU 10 yard line, and on the last play of the game, he tackled a Laker receiver at the 2 yard line to preserve the win.
In his WSU career, Dunn has 47 kickoff returns for 1267 yards, an average of 26.96 yards per return with touchdown returns of 86 yards (on October 21, 2006 vs. Indianapolis), 89 yards (on September 22, 2007 vs. Findlay) and 93 yards (on August 30, 2008 vs. Mercyhurst). He has three of the longest eight kickoff returns for a touchdown in 90 years of WSU football.
Wayne State plays at Saginaw Valley this Saturday before returning to Adams Field to host Indianapolis on Sept. 13.
