Indianapolis, Ind. - The Wayne State University football team (3-5 overall, 2-5 GLIAC) took a lead in the fourth quarter on a school-record tying 90-yard run by sophomore Joique Bell (Benton Harbor, Mich.) and held on for a 34-28 triumph at the University of Indianapolis (5-3 overall, 4-3 GLIAC).
Bell rushed for 151 yards and four touchdowns, while also completing a 68-yard touchdown pass to freshman Travis Campbell (Gahanna, Ohio) on the first WSU play from scrimmage in the second stanza. It was Bell's second career touchdown pass and Campbell's first collegiate touchdown.
Bell had a three-yard scoring run in the first quarter and added a one-yard touchdown in the second period.
The Greyhounds only score of the opening half came on a 20-yard fumble return by Alex Byrnes after the Warriors had built up a 21-0 advantage.
WSU sophomore Bruno Shkreli (Livonia, Mich./Clarenceville) took the second half kickoff 77 yards to the UI two. Bell tallied his third touchdown run on the very next play giving the Warriors a 28-6 lead just 17 seconds into the third quarter.
UI rallied to tie the game at 28 on the final play of the third quarter, but Bell's fourth touchdown run proved to be the game-winner. The 90-yard scoring drive was WSU's fifth scoring drive of at least 90 yards this season, while Bell's run tied the longest touchdown run in school history set by A.J. Vaughn on Sept. 30, 1967, against Wisconsin-Milwaukee.
Bell's first quarter touchdown run snapped the tie with Ed Skowneski (1972-75) for career touchdown runs. It also marks the third time this year Bell has scored four rushing touchdowns in a game.
Despite having his final PAT attempt blocked, place-kicker David Chudzinski (Belleville, Mich.) became WSU's all-time leader in PATs made surpassing Matt Fishburn's (1994-97) mark of 68. Chudzinski is now at 71.
The Warriors return home to face the Northwood Timberwolves for a noon kickoff on Saturday, Oct. 27. The Spirit of '76 band will perform both a pre-game and halftime concert, while kids will be able to "Trick of Treat with the Warriors" at halftime.
