Erie, Pa. - The Wayne State University football team (4-2 overall, 4-1 GLIAC) won its third consecutive road game with a 30-3 triumph at Gannon University Saturday afternoon.
The Warriors' first drive of both halves were two-play scoring drives. After Gannon had to punt on its opening drive, WSU went 55 yards in two plays with senior Jake Weingartz (Lapeer, Mich./East) catching a short out pattern and turning away from defensive back went 52 yards for his first touchdown of the season. For freshman Trent Pohl (Lansing, Mich./Grand Ledge) it was second career touchdown pass.
On the final play of the opening stanza, senior Jerriel Burrus (Belleville, Mich.) returned a Golden Knight punt 19 yards to the Gannon 48. After two first downs, junior David Chudzinski (Belleville, Mich.) connected on a 37-yard field goal attempt giving the Warriors a 10-0 advantage.
Just before intermission, Gannon would score its lone points of the afternoon as Brendan McNicholas made a 43-yard field goal with 3:33 left in the second quarter.
On the first play of the second half, Pohl teamed with senior Nick Body (Ortonville, Mich./Our Lady of the Lakes) on a 49-yard pass play to the Gannon six. Freshman running back Joique Bell (Benton Harbor, Mich.) scored on the next play for a 17-3 WSU lead.
Following a three-and-out for the hosts, Wayne State went 66 yards in six plays for another score. Bell had two carries for first downs, and Body had a 20-yard reception on a second-and-nine and completed the drive with a nine-yard catch for Pohl.
The WSU defense stepped up and stopped Gannon on a fourth-and-one at the GU 44. Six plays later Chudzinski nailed a 39-yard field goal for a 27-3 advantage.
Senior safety Ryan Oshnock (Lakeview, Mich.) recorded his second career interception on the ensuing drive. His first career pick came a year ago against Gannon.
The only scoring in the final period was a 23-yard field goal by Chudzinski.
WSU has won three consecutive road games. The last time Wayne State won three road games in a season was 1997. The Warriors have won four games in a season for the first time since 2000.
Body recorded his 10th career 100-yard receiving game, while Bell went over 1,000 yards becoming just the sixth running back to accomplish the feat in WSU history.
Wayne State will be at home the next two games (Oct. 14 vs. Hillsdale - Homecoming; and Oct. 21 vs. Indianapolis).
