Columbus, Ohio - The Wayne State University fencing teams finished in ninth place with 66 victories at the 2008 NCAA Championship hosted by The Ohio State University.
WSU sophomore Slava Zingerman won his second consecutive national title by defeating Penn State's Arth Urman 15-7 in the national championship bout. Zingerman, the No. 3 seed after the 23 round-robin bouts, defeated Stanley Vaksman from St. John's 15-8 in a semifinal bout.
Also competing for the Warriors was freshman Jakub Gibczynski in the men's sabre. He placed 10th to earn honorable mention All-America accolades. Gibczynski compiled a 12-11 mark (+6 in touches) during the round-robin competition.
The ninth place team finish marks the fifth straight year that Wayne State finished in the top 10 nationally.
Ohio State won the team title with 185 points and was followed by Notre Dame (176), Columbia (158), Penn State (155), St. John's (145), Harvard (101), Penn (92), Stanford (68) and WSU. The Warriors finished ahead of Princeton (59), Duke (48), Northwestern (45), UC-San Diego (44), Temple (42), New York University (37), Yale (35), Brandeis (31), Cornell (31), North Carolina (31), Brown (27), Air Force Academy (25), Haverford (21), Vassar (8), Boston College (7), MIT (7), Stevens Tech (7) and Sacred Heart (5).
