Columbus, Ohio - The Wayne State University fencing teams (men's and women's combined) are in eighth place after the third day of the 2008 NCAA Championship being hosted by The Ohio State University.
WSU sophomore Slava Zingerman, the defending national champion, is in second place in the men's epee after compiling a 10-4 record during Saturday's four rounds. The final three rounds (nine bouts) will be contested on Sunday.
Freshman Jakub Gibczynski is in 11th place in the men's sabre after recording a 7-7 mark and -2 in touches.
The top four competitors in each weapon advance to the 15-touch semifinals.
Ohio State leads the team standings with 149 victories while Notre Dame is second at 147. Columbia (128) is third and is followed by Penn State (123), St. John's (118), Harvard (85), Penn (74) and Wayne State (56).
Trailing the Warriors are Stanford (52), Northwestern (45), Princeton (43), Temple (42), UC-San Diego (37), Duke (33), Cornell (31), North Carolina (26), New York University (25), Yale (21), Brandeis and Brown (20), Haverford (18), Air Force (15), MIT (7), Sacred Heart and Vassar (5), Boston College (4), and Stevens Tech (3).
