JOHN L. GRIFFIN/LIONS CLUB CLASSIC STORYLINES

The Wayne State University men's basketball team continues its season-opening road trip this weekend by participating in the Northern Kentucky University tournament (John L. Griffin/Lions Club Classic). The Warriors face Christian Brothers University (Memphis, TN) in the opening game on Friday before playing the tournament host Norse in Saturday's finale.

ON THE BENCH

Wayne State's David Greer has a 78-65 mark in his sixth season at the helm of the Warrior basketball program. His overall seven-year coaching mark stands at 95-77, which includes one season at Tiffin (1986-87). Mike Nienaber begins his eight season as the Bucs head coach with a record of 100-89 at CBU. Nienaber's career mark of 342-374 includes 16 seasons at Bethel College (McKenzie, Tenn.). Dave Bezold has a 31-26 record in his first two seasons at NKU.

LAST MEETING

NKU owns a 2-0 lead in the all-time series with Wayne State. In their last meeting, the Norse pulled out a 91-85 overtime win over the Warriors in Detroit, Mich., on Dec. 22, 2003. Kendon Edwards led WSU with 23 points and 16 rebounds. NKU won 79-66 on Dec. 23, 2002, at home despite 16 points by Morris Hall.

SCOUTING WAYNE STATE

The Warriors began the regular-season with an 81-64 setback at sixth-ranked Southern Indiana on November 15. Kris Krzyminski led WSU with 22 points and eight rebounds. Freshman Jerry Oden contributed nine points and eight boards. Also scoring eight points for Wayne State were senior Joe Carr, junior Darre Johnson and freshman Lendyn Davis.

SCOUTING CHRISTIAN BROTHERS

The Buccaneers posted a 70-52 triumph over Lynn (Fla.) on November 15. Kevin Weybright led CBU with 29 points on nine-of-13 shooting including five-of-seven from beyond the three-point line. Nick Kohs contributed a double-double with 12 points and 13 rebounds. Kohs was the Gulf South Conference West Freshman of the Year last season, while Weybright was the best rookie the previous campaign. Forty percent (6 of 15) of CBU's roster consists of players from Ohio (five from Cincinnati and one from Dayton).

SCOUTING NORTHERN KENTUCKY

The Norse have been idle since a 58-44 exhibition loss to Division I Xavier on November 6. NKU was selected to win the GLVC East Division by the league's coaches. Senior center James Cripe scored 10 points and grabbed nine rebounds against Xavier. Cripe, the first 7-footer in Norse history, is a transfer from Dayton. NKU senior guard Steven Wright finished with 10 points, five rebounds and five assists against Xavier. A transfer from Bowling Green State, Wright also blocked a shot and added a steal in the Xavier game.

UP NEXT

The Warriors return to the Matthaei for their home opener on November 21 against Northern Michigan in a non-league contest. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. following the WSU women's game versus Central State.
