GAMES 1-2 STORYLINES
Wayne State officially begins the 2007-08 campaign on Thursday, Nov. 15 versus Marygrove College and two days later faces SIU-Edwardsville.
The Warriors, under seventh-year head coach David Greer, have nine new faces after graduating three starters from last year's team that accounted for 45 of WSU's 67 points per game.
Of the nine new players, five are junior college transfers, one was redshirted at Kentucky State (Tim Giles) and three are true freshmen.
The two returning starters are seniors Jason Saddler and Wynn Sarden. Saddler was named to the GLIAC South Division All-Defensive team a year ago, while Sarden is WSU's top-returning scorer.
Wayne State is 6-0 in home openers under Greer and 3-3 in season openers. WSU has won 16 consecutive home openers since a 100-95 overtime setback to St. Mary's on Nov. 21, 1990.
The Warriors have a season-opening four-game home stand, all against non-league foes, before hitting the road for two non-GLIAC contests in Ohio (Nov. 28 at Central State and Dec. 1 at Tiffin).
Following the game at Tiffin, the next three Wayne State games will be conference tilts. WSU closes out 2007 with participation in the Findlay Holiday Classic.
Fourteen (14) of Wayne State's 15 games in 2008 will be league contests with the lone non-GLIAC match taking place on Feb. 13 at California (Pa.).
IN THE POLLS
Wayne State was selected for second in the GLIAC South Division of the 2007-08 pre-season media poll, while SIUE was tabbed for third in the GLVC West. Marygrove is an independent of the USCAA and a NAIA provisional member.
ON THE BENCH
Wayne State's David Greer enters his seventh season at WSU and eighth season overall with records of 91-77 and 108-89, respectively.
Glen Donahue is in his first year at Marygrove, while SIUE's Lennox Forrester is also in his first season.
ALL-TIME SERIES
Wayne State leads the all-time series against Marygrove 2-0. Both games were played in 2005 (WSU won 107-63 on Jan. 10, and 113-45 on Nov. 22).
WSU has a 2-1 lead in the all-time series against the Cougars of SIUE. Wayne State won the last meeting, 56-55, in an NCAA Regional contest on March 12, 2005.
SCOUTING MARYGROVE
The Mustangs are under the direction of first-year head coach Glen Donahue. MC compiled a 14-20 mark last year and returns two starters - guard Anthony Acho (11 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists per game) and forward Curtis Leavy (7 points, 4 rebounds per game).
Marygrove is a member of the United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA).
SCOUTING SIU-EDWARDSVILLE
The Cougars return six letterwinners from a squad that went 15-12 a year ago. First-year head coach Lennox Forrester has two starters returning in guard J.B. Jones (9 points, 3 rebounds per game) and center Doug Taylor (6 points, 5 rebounds per game).
SIUE has a 6-10 freshman center from Serbia and a 6-6 forward that transferred from Bradley.
