Highland Hts., Ky. - The Wayne State University men's basketball squad (0-2 overall) opened 2006 John L. Griffin/Lions Club Classic at Northern Kentucky University with a 66-51 loss to Christian Brothers University (2-0 overall) Friday evening.
The Buccaneers scored the first six points of the contest as the Warriors did not score until the 15:19 mark on a triple by junior Wynn Sarden (Sterling Hts., Mich./Warren Cousino). WSU missed its first four field goal attempts plus had a turnover in its initial five possessions.
CBU tallied the next four points before a bucket by freshman Jerry Oden (Detroit, Mich./Cass Tech).
Wayne State trailed 20-7 prior to a jumper by senior Kris Krzyminski (Flint, Mich./Central) and a lay-up by Sarden made it a 20-11 contest with 7:20 remaining in the first half.
Following another Sarden lay-up, CBU went on a 6-0 run for a 30-13 lead with 3:50 left before intermission.
Despite triples from Krzyminski and freshman Lendyn Davis (Lansing, Mich./Sexton) sandwiched around a jumper by senior Will Pierce (Detroit, Mich./Renaissance), the Warriors trailed 37-21 after 20 minutes.
WSU pulled within 14 at 39-25 after back-to-back buckets by Sarden, but the Buccaneers responded with a 7-0 run for their largest lead of the game.
Wayne State would get within 12 points at 54-42 following a three-pointer by senior Joe Carr (Detroit, Mich./Renaissance) with 8:02 remaining in the match.
Sarden led all scorers with 17 points while Krzyminski chipped in with 10 points. Oden contributed nine points for the second consecutive contest.
The Warriors were outrebounded 28-16 as CBU shot 62.5 percent (30-48) from the floor. WSU made 20 of 43 field goal attempts (46.5 percent).
Wayne State concludes its season-opening three-game road trip by playing Northern Kentucky University on its home court in the final game of the 2006 Lions Club Classic in Highland Hts., Ky.
