Evansville, Ind. - The Wayne State University men's basketball team (0-1 overall) began its 2006-07 regular season with an 81-64 setback at sixth-ranked Southern Indiana (4-0 overall) Wednesday evening.
The Warriors started strong leading 2-0 on jumper by senior Joe Carr (Detroit, Mich./Renaissance) and 5-3 following a triple by Carr.
A lay-up by freshman Jerry Oden (Detroit, Mich./Cass Tech), after an offensive rebound, tied the game at seven less than four minutes into the contest. WSU trailed by one at 10-9 30 seconds later following a lay-up by senior Kris Krzyminski (Flint, Mich./Central).
The host Screaming Eagles then went on a 12-0 run over the next 5:50 which ended on a jumper by freshman Lendyn Davis (Lansing, Mich./Sexton) which made it a 22-11 contest. The Warriors had five turnovers and missed six shots during the scoreless drought.
Over the last nine minutes of the opening half, WSU outscored USI 21-19. Krzyminski led all players with 15 points in the opening 20 minutes, but the Warriors committed 13 turnovers to eight for the Screaming Eagles. Both teams attempted 26 field goals in the first half but USI made 16 to WSU's 11 for a 41-32 advantage.
During the first 7:25 of the second half, Southern Indiana outscored the Warriors 20-6 to build up a 23-point lead at 61-38.
Wayne State never quit and had a 12-2 run over the final three minutes. Krzyminski scored three points, while junior Darre Johnson (Inkster, Mich./Wayne Memorial) tallied five points, Davis had two free throws and freshman Larry Edwards (Benton Harbor, Mich.) made a jumper.
Krzyminski led all scorers with 22 points to equal a career-high, and also had a team-high eight rebounds along with Oden as the Warriors held a 33-28 rebounding advantage. Oden contributed nine points while Carr, Johnson and Davis each scored eight points.
Wayne State continues its season-opening road trip this Friday with a contest against Christian Brothers University at 5:30 p.m. in the opening game of the 2006 John L. Griffin/Lions Club Classic at Northern Kentucky University.
