DETROIT - The Wayne State University men's basketball team (1-0) began its 2007-08 regular season with a 110-67 non-conference triumph over Marygrove College (1-2).
The Warriors started a little sluggish and were tied with the Mustangs five times in the first six minutes with the last time coming at 12-12 on a free throw by MC's Dave Lewandowski. In the first six minutes, the largest lead was three (12-9) by WSU following a jumper by junior Lorenzo McClelland (Oak Park, Mich./Oak Park/Mott CC).
Wayne State then went on a 17-3 run over the next seven minutes keyed by seven points from Lendyn Davis (Lansing, Mich./Sexton) and four each from Jason Saddler (Detroit, Mich./Cody/Mott CC) and Emanuel Carter (Detroit, Mich./Kettering/Macomb CC).
Marygrove cut it to 11 on a triple by Mike Hawkes, but the Warriors responded with the next seven points, all from Wynn Sarden (Sterling Heights, Mich./Warren Cousino/Macomb CC) for an 18-point cushion at 36-18. WSU outscored the guests 13-4 over the final five minutes of the opening half for a 49-22 advantage at intermission.
Wayne State had 17 points off 22 MC turnovers, while the Warriors also had 10 second chance points to none for the Mustangs.
Sarden had 16 points in the opening 20 minutes with McClelland contributing a dozen.
WSU scored nine of the first 11 points of the second half for a 58-24 lead with 16:55 remaining.
The lead was never below 31 the rest of the way.
McClelland had a game-high 22 points on 10 of 16 from the floor with Sarden contributing 18 as six different Warriors scored in double figures. Also hitting double digits were Jeremy Lathan (Portland, Ore./Benson Tech/Eastern Utah)) with 14, Davis with 12, Carter with 11 and James Topping (Troy, Mich./Troy) with 10. WSU shot 54.2 percent (45-83) from the floor and held a 46-33 edge on the boards. Both Carter and Topping had eight rebounds while MC's Justin McKinney had a game-high 10 rebounds.
Wayne State continues its season-opening homestand with a 3 p.m. tip-off on Saturday vs. SIU-Edwardsville at the Matthaei.
