DETROIT - The Wayne State University men's basketball team (9-15 overall, 3-12 GLIAC) battled second-ranked Grand Valley State (28-0 overall, 16-0 GLIAC) Saturday afternoon at the Matthaei but the visiting Lakers came away with a 75-55 win.

WSU's only lead of the game was at 3-2 following a triple by sophomore Lendyn Davis (Lansing, Mich./Sexton) off an assist from freshman Bryan Smothers (Pontiac, Mich./Northern) 90 seconds into the game.

A lay-up by senior Jason Saddler (Detroit, Mich./Cody) after an offensive rebound pulled the Warriors within two at 7-5, but WSU would go the next 7:30 without making a field goal as GVSU built a 19-8 advantage. Wayne State missed its next 11 field goal attempts before a lay-up by senior Wynn Sarden (Sterling Hts., Mich./Warren Cousino) at the 8:27 mark.

After jumper by Smothers at the 6:22 mark pulled the Warriors within nine at 21-12, the Lakers scored the next six points.

Wayne State responded with a 10-3 run over a four minute period to cut the deficit to eight at 30-22 following a Sarden jumper.

A jumper by Davis in the first minute of the second half made it an eight-point contest at 32-24, but WSU would not make another field goal for 3:30.

The Warriors were within 11 at 39-28 following a lay-up by Emanuel Carter (Detroit, Mich./Kettering), but went scoreless for the next 2:30 as the Lakers tallied 10 consecutive points.

Wayne State had its best free throw shooting game of the season - 90 percent (9-10) - but allowed opponent highs in field goal percentage (56 on 28-of-5) and three-point field goal percentage (56 on 9-of-16).

GVSU's Pete Trammell recorded a game-high 20 points including 4-of-5 from beyond the arc. Callistus Eziukwu had 19 points, four blocks and a game-best 10 rebounds.

A trio of WSU players scored 10 points including freshman Tim Giles (Southfield, Mich./Southfield-Lathrup), who surpassed his previous high eight set at Hillsdale on Feb. 2. Also scoring in double figures were Smothers and Davis.

Wayne State will close out the regular season with two games next week. The Warriors visit Ashland on Thursday before hosting Hillsdale on Saturday.
