Hillsdale, Mich. - The Wayne State University men's basketball team (9-11 overall, 3-9 GLIAC) suffered a 74-54 league loss at Hillsdale College (12-9 overall, 6-6 GLIAC) Saturday afternoon.
The host Chargers scored the first eight points of the game before a 12-6 run by the Warriors made it a two-point contest near the mid-point of the opening half. Junior Lorenzo McClelland (Oak Park, Mich.) and senior Jason Saddler (Detroit, Mich./Cody) each had four points for WSU during the run.
HC scored the next five points before a McClelland bucket made it 19-14. Another 5-0 run by Hillsdale preceded a lay-up by sophomore Lendyn Davis (Lansing, Mich./Sexton). Davis' hoop started a 9-3 Warrior run that included a triple by sophomore Larry Edwards (Benton Harbor, Mich.) and jumpers by freshman Bryan Smothers (Pontiac, Mich./Northern) and McClelland.
WSU trailed 27-23 with just under four minutes remaining before halftime but the Chargers closed out the opening 20 minutes by scoring 11 of the final 17 points for a 38-29 lead at the break.
Davis scored the first points of the second half, but HC's Tony Gugino, who would finish the contest with 41 points tallied the game's next 11 points giving the hosts a 49-31 advantage with 12:26 remaining.
Wayne State would not get closer than 15 points the rest of the contest.
McClelland was the only Warrior in double figures with 16 points. Saddler and junior Emanuel Carter (Detroit, Mich./Kettering) each had six rebounds for WSU as the Warriors held a 35-33 advantage on the boards.
In addition to Gugino's 41 points and 11 rebounds, Tim Homan added 10 points.
Hillsdale shot 51 percent (29-57) to WSU's 39 percent (23-59).
Wayne State will try to snap its six-game losing streak on Thursday at Mercyhurst. Tip-off at the Mercyhurst Athletic Center is slated for 8 p.m.
