DETROIT, Mich. - Battling snow flurries and a temperature in the low 30s, the Wayne State baseball team (17-10, 6-3 GLIAC) defeated the University of Findlay (16-12, 8-3 GLIAC), 11-3, in the first game of a doubleheader on Friday afternoon.
Tony Hines (Detroit, Mich./Mumford) went 3-for-5 with two home runs, four RBI, and two runs scored. Ryan LaPensee (LaSalle, Ont./St. Thomas of Villanova) also posted three hits, four RBI, and two runs, while Brett Witczak (Hudsonville, Mich.) and Matt Cunningham (Gregory, Mich./Chelsea) had two hits apiece.
WSU starter Anthony Bass (Trenton, Mich.) pitched a complete game for the win, surrendering three runs on seven hits, walking three and striking out eight.
Findlay jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first, but an RBI single by LaPensee in the second, bringing in Jon Weisman (Woodhaven, Mich.) who led off the inning with a double, cut the Oilers' lead in half.
The Oilers answered with a run in the third before the Warriors scored four times in the bottom of the fourth to take a 5-3 lead. Witczak hit an RBI single to left and Hines smacked a three-run homer to right center.
Wayne State tacked on three runs in each of the next two innings to seal the victory. LaPensee hit a two-run double and, after advancing two bases on a Findlay error, came in to score on a pinch-hit single by John Skaggs (Adrian, Mich.).
After Hines led off the sixth with a solo homer, Cunningham hit an RBI double to left and LaPensee drove in a run with a sacrifice fly.
Bass (4-1) shut out the Oilers and gave up just three hits over the final four innings.
